Southeastern North Carolina Folks

Genealogy files of NC and VA include Allen, Burney, Cain, Chesnutt, Cooke, Grimes, Heath, Hollingsworth, Knight, Lennon, McDaniel, McRaney, Meares, Newton, Parker, Roper, Sellers, Shipman, Singletary, Stevens, Stringfield, and Willis. Useable genealogy links are provided.

There are over 39,000 names and, of course, they include different spellings of the above names. Many of these came to southeastern NC from England in the 17th century with a stop in southeastern VA (Accomac, Brunswick, Isle of Wight, Lower Norfolk, Northampton, Surry, and Sussex Counties). Others are thought to have come from Ireland and Scotland, but I have not gotten back that far with proof.

My Mother and I were born in Bladen County, NC and my Dad in neighboring Sampson County, NC. Many of my ancestors came to these two counties in the 18th century. Therefore, there is a lot of data from these two counties and the surrounding NC counties (Brunswick, Columbus, Cumberland, Duplin, New Hanover, and Robeson).

(7/10/05) Check out Heath of Craven, Heath of Duplin, Heath of Surry, Hollingsworth, McDaniel, McRaney, Meares, Newton, Parker, Shipman, Stephens, Stringfield, and Willis. Previously, in error, only four generations were shown. Some now have over 20 generations.

(5/27/05) Sam Pait removed his great site on the SINGLETARYs, which I referenced. Have small replacement.

(2/21/05) By mistake, my host deleted my web page on 2/1/05 and restored it today (2/21/05).

(12/29/04) UPDATE. My relatives (37,545). Possible relatives (2176). Added SELLERS (1149) that I have just begun. Much of this data came from Ed Hudson and the Sellers Family Page. Added COOKE (25), GRIMES (26), HOLLINGSWORTH (13), MEARES (10), PARKER (100), SHIPMAN (50), and WILLIS (1). Added several links including 1790 census and County Origins for eastern NC, SC, and VA.

Paternal Surnames on left and Maternal surnames on right. Connection to surname is listed by level of grandmother. "2g" is second great-grandmother.

I have attempted to not show dates of the living when I did not find them in print or on the internet. I also have not shown names and dates of the living when requested by the provider of the data.

Data was collected on the Allens of Kelly and Cains of Turnbull when searching for the Allens and Cains of Tar Heel. I have not connected the Allens or Cains as beginning from one family, but they are related by marriage. Some researchers have family legends that say five CAIN brothers came to southeastern NC. Two of these settled in NC and one in SC. The SC Cain family later came to Bladen County, NC. The Cains located around Bladenboro, Bladen County, NC (which I have not collected) seem to be the third Cain family. There are also two CAIN families in the Turnbull Creek area listed below that I can not attach.
